This introduction conversation will prepare our audience for a day of high intensity workshops with an ultimate goal of linking many of our health topics together.  From HIV to COVID and all the Sexually transmitted diseases in between, this engaging 40 minutes whole group workshop will take you through a common thread of compassion, ownership, accountability and a renewed sense of knowledge.

Showcase your schools Peer Program During this workshop students from each school will review their own schools Peer Program and take time to connect with peers across the state to talk about the great work each program is doing!

Workshop #1: Empowering Leaders: Understanding the impact of nicotine and cannabis use on individuals, families and communities

Location: Little Theater.

Facilitator: VALERIE

In this workshop, participants will explore current drug trends, examining their effects on individuals, families and communities. We'll discuss the physiological and psychological impacts of nicotine and cannabis, including addiction, mental health implications, and academic performance. Additionally, we'll examine the role of peer support in navigating these challenges, empowering attendees to become leaders in promoting a healthier environment within their high school.  By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the effects of vaping nicotine and marijuana, as well as practical strategies for supporting their peers and fostering a healthier, more resilient high school community.

Interactive Component: 

Share real-life scenarios of teens who have struggled with substance use. Break the students up into groups to discuss what they would do as a by-stander, friend, acquaintance in each scenario: Peer pressure, concerning social media posts and trends, unhealthy coping strategies, and substance use disorders.

Expectations V. Reality of Social Media: This eye opening and interactive lesson is a unique way of teaching their peers on the false reality of social media. This lesson is being taught by Syosset High School Peer Helpers students who taught this lesson to every 10th grade at Syosset High School through their Physical Education Wellness program,

This workshop will equip high school students with practical coping techniques for managing stress, including mindfulness exercises, deep-breathing practices, and perspective-shifting strategies to build resilience. Students will also engage in hands-on activities to create take-home items. By the end of the session, participants will have gained valuable skills to manage stress and a toolkit to help others navigate challenging situations.
